The goal of this book, says author Charles Lane, is to perform a dramatic rescue of stewardship, freeing it from any connection whatsoever to "paying the bills." When the Bible talks about stewardship it almost always talks about the intimate connection between how a person handles financial matters and that person's relationship with God. Stewardship is an intensely spiritual matter that lies close to a disciple's relationship with Jesus.

The book is designed especially for use in congregational planning and study. Congregational stewardship leaders will come back to three foundational verbs — ask, thank, tell — over and over as they help individuals experience the joy of giving generously. The author makes the convincing case that there is little in life today that can help a disciple grow in relationship with Jesus more than a solid intentional biblical stewardship.

"This book is beautifully and concisely written, pulls no punches, and lends itself to chapter by chapter discussion. It is deeply theological and spiritual, and highly practical, the ideal way to train and orient people to the ministry of helping people grow in relationship to God by growing as disciples who are "walking the walk." The only thing it does not do is reference the sort of social data that Michael Durall's book does so well."

  • Charles Lane provides a framework for a stewardship program based on these three actions--Ask, Thank, Tell--along with specific examples of what might be included at each step. Underneath the "how to" runs the continual thread that stewardship is about helping people grow in their relationship with Jesus through the use of the resources God has entrusted to them.

The ideas presented could be adapted by congregations of all sizes,by those who find it difficult to talk about money or by those who embrace financial stewardship as a spiritual matter.
  • great resource
  • A friend of mine lent me her copy to read and when I did I just had to buy it myself so I could reread and reference it. If only this were required reading for anyone on a stewardship committee or vestry for that matter. It outlines specific do's and don'ts for running a stewardship committee with emphasis on discipleship, not membership. This means a focus on what it means to be a christian and how that motivates your giving instead of a focus on the budget and the church needs x amount of money to survive. The first is ultimately a much more long-term, sustainable strategy, whereas the second will burn people out if it is the only dimension your fundraising has.
  • I've used this book differently in three different congregations now. Attendances of 30, 120, and 225, budgets from 60,000 to 555000. From it you can create a stewardship plan that will work for you year-round that has the right core values, not just "We need more money to pay the bills". I highly reccommend.
  • If you are looking for a book that addresses Stewardship more deeply than simply talking about money, you have the right book! This is a GREAT book for both individuals and congregations looking more closely at stewardship as a product of discipleship. Charles Lane is to be commended for 'getting the news' out about the sometimes difficult subject of Stewardship.

  • This book has the fundamentals of stewardship . This is a great book for church members to use. Many forget the "Thank You".
  • Great assistance to the Ministry team. Hope with development of ideas for transforming minds about stewardship, giving of time, talents, and financial resources.
