• I love this book! It is fresh and alive and filled with spirited play. I woke up (more and more) during its pages and now that its done, I'm going outside to find a place to build that campfire I've been wanting to light since last Spring!
• I just finished The Part-Time Shaman and enjoyed it very much. I like the way the author simultaneously takes seriously and spoofs New Age activities and attitudes. It’s clear that he's into it and also that he takes it with a grain of salt, and that somehow makes it both profound and lighthearted—which is a great combination! There’s also a concreteness and liveliness about the poems—and the wonderful illustrations that accompany them—that makes the book enjoyable to take in.
  
  One of the "exercises" in the book actually caused a change in my attitude toward my new job. In Exercise 3 ~ Community the author says “Perform service to others every day,” and that made me realize that I’d been looking at my job only from my own point of view—what it is or isn’t doing for me. So, I instantly switched over to thinking about how my work helps other people in the company, and that ego-free approach has transformed my attitude. Thanks, part-time shaman!
• Michael Gillan Maxwell's collection, The Part-Time Shaman Handbook, cracks open the fissure to childhood with peyote force of recognition back at us. Strips the stagnant, uniform blinders that have `adulted' us. "Embrace the chaos, the fury," unfurl "the language of forgotten races." Listen to that "space between words." Every pocket is wide enough to encompass this mosaic of numinous color and truth. Read it, hallucinate!
• Just got this in the mail today and it's so perfect. It makes me smile and it makes me wonder and it makes me sad, in a gentle way. I love Maxwell's writing. This opening incantation "...speak the unspeakable / know the unknowable / push beyond the safety of outer limits / take our first thought and follow it / down the Byzantine maze / until we no longer recognize it as ours..." is an example of how the poet can transform the personal into the universal. Please buy this book and read it. We all need to feel the humanity it asks of us, the wonder, and the spirit healing.
