The author asked more than 1,200 people about items they’d been able to negotiate lowered credit-card rates, lowered rent, getting a college grade change, discounted hotel rate or an upgraded room, and so forth.
She also studied the reverse—why people failed to ask for what they really wanted and why they routinely settle for less than their dreams. The results are intriguing about why people “settle.â€
The stories were particularly insightful when other interviewees had outstanding results by simply asking for what they wanted.
The author also emphasizes the need to prepare for the big ask—one of her key points.
Plenty here to inspire someone to start asking for more! Checklists and reminders quite helpful. - As a promoter of assertiveness, I was so pleased to discover Linda Swindling's terrific book. She makes a strong case for venturing forward and asking for what we want and need, even when we are not comfortable doing so. Her guidebook offers cogent examples of the language to use and highlights great case studies, including her own failures and successes around asking. I highly recommend this one!

While this book results from extensive research and the author refers to herself whimsically as a “recovering attorney,†you will find clear directions for increasing your courage and tact so that you ask courageously more often—and get what you want.
At the outset Linda Byars Swindling defines “ask outrageously†as making a request outside your comfort zone.
Right away, she offers relief to those who feel high tension when they yearn for a result yet fear what will happen if they ask for it “Asking outrageously feels the same, no matter the dollar amount or the consequences. The adrenaline rush, the fear, the excitement, the quickening heartbeat, the change in breathing, and the concentrated attention feel the same.â€
Yet here’s the good news The “people who ask outrageously receive unbelievable results in all areas of their lives.â€
For those of us who dwell on our past failures when we asked for what we desired “You can choose to live in the past—or choose to live past it.†Again “Make peace with your past before it tears you to pieces.â€

If so, this book will be an asset to you. Some of the advice is common sense but many of us aren't doing these things! Swindling pushes the reader to be more assertive and less afraid of going for what you want.
