Upside Down edition by NR Walker Romance eBooks Reviews

  • Do you have any books that are on your “I’m sorry I ever read this” list because of trauma it caused you? Flowers for Algernon is the top book on my list for this. So, you may imagine my concern when it turns out that Flowers fit Algernon plays a big part in the initial relationship in this book. But, it turns out this book (the one by NR Walker, NOT FfA) is funny, intelligent (which is one of my fave qualities in a book), and was very helpful in my continued education in human sexuality. This book explores an asexual relationship, emphasizing the fact that asexuality is as normal and individually nuanced as any other expression of sexuality within a relationship, and that intimate love does not by definition require sex, nor does sex equal intimate love. I was struck by my own underlying beliefs regarding this that were so ingrained I didn’t recognize them until this book pointed out. We as a society are bombarded with messages regarding this whether we recognize it or not, and I was challenged to consider my own patterns of thinking . This book was so enjoyable and yet enlightening, it even makes me consider a reread of Flowers for Algernon to see if there is something in it I missed that may redeem it in my mind. If this book can accomplish that, you know it is an amazing book.
  • (If that's a terrible pun, I'm sorry, but not really)

I don't think I'll ever get sick of this author's style. Her books, no matter which way she's going - and she's taken us places robots, vampires, architects, ancient Greeks, the gym, etc etc etc; I think she needs to give her brain to science so we can figure out what's going on in there, after she's done with it because creepy and we need more books first but I digress (much like the Jordan in this book does) - you're given an absolutely gorgeous story.

Here we are given two main characters who are very similar in a lot of ways - which is good for compatibility - but their differences make seeing them together so, well, adorable. Jordan and Hennessy, are two people who are just made for each other. And seeing Hennessy help Jordan navigate his new possible label of 'asexual' is done really well and thoughtfully. And Jordan's rambling is very charming and I think it's soothing for Hennessy. Jordan is also hilarious and kind, a good counterbalance to Hennessy's thoughtfulness and steadiness.

The stuff on the bus just kills me with feelings just thinking about it. I don't want to delve into that any further and ruin it. But trust me. You want the 'on the bus' goodness ASAP.

Also, love the secondary/tertiary characters in this book. The friendship, camaraderie, loyalty and limericks - yes there are some limericks - just rounds everything up so well in this book.

I think something special to mention is there is no "big, bad, antagonist" character. There is an 'ex' who makes an appearance. But for this book, the opposing force is no one person, but an idea, a history of "people" who in their ignorance of what asexuality is hurt the people who are ace.

Finally, because Jordan and Hennessy are both so freakin' smart it made me think of how smart and insightful the author is. The amount of research she does (and not only in this book) really just shows how much she puts into her craft, I appreciate that so much, and we can all enjoy the results in a beautifully put together story.

    Just a wonderful, brilliant, read.
  • Jordan is honestly one of the best characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading! He’s so down to earth and funny and just very human and I swear I wish he was my best friend! Hennessy is about as perfect for Jordan as it gets and watching these two interact as Jordan figures out asexuality and what it means for him is heartwarming and fully entertaining! The cast of supporting characters are a riot too! This is easily one of the best books NR Walker has ever written and even with the lack of sex in the book, the intimacy and connection is still intense and perfect and amazing! Upside Down is so honest and I feel like there really weren’t any pretenses! I super loved it!!
  • Holy crap it’s beautiful, it's fantastic and beyond words. It made me stop and gasp beautifuly. I can’t even tell you how many lines in this book I have highlighted! Probably the whole book lol.

So…obviously, I highly recommend it! And not just to asexual people but to everybody. The way N.R. Walker has explained, define and expose this concept made me swoon. This is a 12 out of 10 points. My favorite book of her is this one from now on.

It is erotic! It's a romance and the chemistry between Jordan and Hennessy is fire. It starts with a bang and rambling and laughing and just beautiful awkwardness and then it just get better and better the more they discover each other and themselves, about their wants, their needs, their orientation and what it means... For them, for each other. It’s not about sex, actually THERE IS NO SEX, but the story is so perfect, true and relatable. The side characters are just lovely and amazing. This is an eye opener and an amazing beautiful truly wonderful story.
